The spiral as a form evolved in many cultures, and is particularly developed in Maori carving art forms. In New Zealand art it is often presumed that a spiral will have been inspired or derived from Maori art forms, in this case the incised design is based on Irish Celtic metalwork and is deliberately ambiguous so it can easily interpreted as Maori.
